Cyclist killed on Central Park West

The mangled bike at the scene of the accident

A truck driver has been charged in connection with the death of 23-year-old Aussie tourist Madison Lyden, who was killed yesterday while riding a rented bicycle near Central Park in NY.

Madison Jane Lyden, 23, was heading uptown in a bike lane on Central Park West when a livery cab pulled into the bike lane, prompting her to swerve, police said.

Ms Lyden was hit by the garbage truck when she swerved, police said.

An Australian cyclist has been killed in a collision while on holiday in NY, police have said.

She was rushed to the hospital with severe body injuries and later died.

Police have confirmed that 44-year-old Felipe Chairez faces charges of driving while intoxicated, driving while ability-impaired and driving a commercial vehicle under the influence of alcohol. It's not clear whether he has an attorney who could speak for him.

‘It’s a lie,’ Holy Fire arson suspect tells judge
Before he was arrested, Clark told a freelance cameraman he was asleep when the fire started and had no idea how it began. Those areas had previously been under voluntary evacuation orders. "I said, 'I want nothing to do with you, Forrest".

New York's mayor, Bill de Blasio, visited the scene of the accident and told NBC news too many drivers "didn't take care" on the city's streets.

Dozens of bystanders rushed to Lyden's aid.

New York City transportation advocacy group Transportation Alternatives said it was "a crash waiting to happen" because "lazy and entitled drivers" were parking, dropping people off and idling in bike lanes. Her latest stop had brought her along with friends to NYC, in what was presumably supposed to be the trip of a lifetime.

A colleague described her as "bright and bubbly".

Ms Lyden had been working at a Waurn Ponds aquatic centre for nearly two years.
