A Chinese tourist was killed by a hippo while taking pictures on the edge of Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Rift Valley just hours after a local fisherman was mauled to death in the same area, authorities said on Sunday.

Wildlife service spokesman Paul Udoto said the circumstances are not clear in which the two Chinese were attacked.

A Chinese tourist has died after being bitten in the chest by a hippo he was trying to photograph in Kenya.

The agency named the dead man as Chang Ming Chuang, 66, and the survivor as Wu Peng Te, 62.

The attacks brought to six the number people who have been attacked and killed by hippos around the troubled water body since the year began.

"He was rushed to Naivasha sub-county hospital bleeding profusely but he passed on while undergoing treatment", he said.

Hippos are considered the most risky land animal in Africa because the world's third largest mammal can be extremely aggressive and territorial. "We are tracking the hippo", KWS mentioned in a tweet.

Chairman of Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association David Kilo said the rise in water levels had contributed to the increase in hippo attacks.

Kenya has had several months of heavy rains this year which resulted in serious flooding, including around Lake Naivasha.

Tourism earned Kenya $1.2bn (£950m) past year, with 1.4 million worldwide arrivals.
