Bairstow and Woakes put England on top against India in second Test

India vs England 2nd Test Virat Kohli was at the non-striker's end when Cheteshwar Pujara was run out

Having been bowled out for 107 on day two of the stop-start, rain-affected match at the home of cricket, the tourists knew they had to make early inroads into the hosts batting line-up.

India had recalled left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who tormented England during the preceding one-day series, for just his third Test after dropping paceman Umesh Yadav, who bowled well at Edgbaston.

Woakes joined Bairstow and, while Shami and Sharma were getting the ball to reverse swing and there was some uneven bounce, the England pair negotiated their way through the tricky spells before beginning to accelerate and bringing up their 100 partnership in the first over of the evening session.

Woakes, back after thigh and knee injuries that have so far blighted his summer, started the carnage after he had Kohli caught on 23 by Jos Buttler at second slip just one ball after the same man had dropped him. That meant England were on 137 for five, already 22 runs ahead of India's first-innings total of 107.

Perhaps it is the nearby canals of Little Venice but Woakes seems to find himself at home at Lord's, this is now his third Test at the ground and he's taken 16 wickets at average of 9.93 and made 244 runs at 122.00.

With Woakes, the first of England's three bowling all-rounders, at the crease alongside Bairstow, India could sense an opportunity to expose the tail.

China to slap additional tariffs on US$16 bln of United States goods
That had brought China into the firing line with its enormous and growing economy, the People's Daily commentary said. The US Gulf-to-China voyage takes between 40 and 45 days, as opposed to 30 to 35 days from the Middle East.

Chris Woakes gave Bairstow fine support as England stretched their lead.

The wicket, which left India 15-3, prompted a downpour so heavy the rest of the players sprinted off the field and overtook a crestfallen Pujara on the boundary rope.

With the sun shining it looked like flawless batting conditions, but the rare rainfall of the previous two days in London still gave the India attack hope they could bowl their side back into he match.

He was written off as too slow for Test cricket, so he went away and added a few yards of pace. The Indian batsmen have themselves to blame as much as the top-class bowling from the English fast-bowlers led by James Anderson. Root LBW to Shami for a less than fluent 28.

Woakes, 29, dismissed India skipper Virat Kohli on day two and continued to impress today as he put England in complete control of the match with an unbeaten ton.
