Anti-Fascist Mark Unite the Right Anniversary With Charlottesville March

Rabbi Bruce Lustig of Washington Hebrew Congregation is surrounded by clergy of multiple faiths as he helps launch a weekend of counterprotests against white supremacist marchers in Washington D.C. Aug. 10 2018

President Trump addressed concerns this morning tweeting that last year's event resulted in "senseless death and division" and condemning all forms of "racism and acts of violence".

Trump drew strong criticism in the days after the Charlottesville rally a year ago for equating white supremacists with counter-protesters and saying "both sides" were to blame.

"Some of our members are concerned about safety for their staff and guests and came to us with questions as we are a resource for the restaurant community. Peace to ALL Americans!", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Susan Bro, mother of Heather Heyer, who was killed during the Unite the Right rally a year ago, wants people "to focus on the anniversary, not on Heather, but on the issues that she died for, Black Lives Matter, overpolicing, affordable housing".

"We've always acted as if black lives never mattered, as if people of color never mattered", Bro told Cooper on Full Circle.

A Charlottesville native, born in the segregated basement of the University of Virginia hospital, Brown-Grooms said white supremacy was present in Charlottesville long before the rally and is the "elephant in the room" the city now must deal with.

The Rally for Justice began as a demonstration on UVA's Grounds on Saturday, but the group make its way through the streets of Charlottesville and all the way to the Downtown Mall.

Earlier this week, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and the city of Charlottesville both declared states of emergency for events in and around Charlottesville and Washington, D.C. The following day, a much larger gathering of white nationalists near a downtown park erupted into violence.

Another far right rally is scheduled to take place this Sunday in close proximity to the White House.

He flew through the air performing all kinds of unsafe maneuvers before crashing into a small island in the Puget Sound. It will be up the Federal Bureau of Investigation to get to the bottom of how he did it and why, Eckrote said.

Last year, 22-year-old Clara Carlson faced down the group of white supremacists who marched through campus, surrounding her and a group of friends.

Charlottesville is some 187 kilometers from Washington, but officials and opponents of the white nationalist rally fear some protesters may travel to Washington or parts of nearby Northern Virginia.

Lisa Woolfork, a University of Virginia professor and Black Lives Matter Charlottesville organizer, said police are mounting a "huge, overwhelming show of force to compensate for last year's inaction".

Clashes at the rally resulted in at least 30 injuries and the death of Heather Heyer, after a vehicle driven by James Alex Fields Jr. plowed into a group of counter-protesters.

"Cops and Klan go hand in hand", he said.

Carlson said police didn't intervene to help her or her friends that night a year ago.

Two Virginia state troopers who were monitoring the rally were later killed in the line of duty when their helicopter crashed. I think it's a low bar for the president of the United States to simply say he's against racism.

An independent investigation of last year's rally violence, led by a former federal prosecutor, found the chaos stemmed from a passive response by law enforcement and poor preparation and coordination between state and city police.
