World at risk of heading towards irreversible 'hothouse' state

‘Hothouse Earth’: Planet will become ‘uninhabitable’ if climate tipping point reached, study finds

It may be very hard or impossible to stop the whole row of dominoes from tumbling over.

The Earth is at risk of falling into an irreversible greenhouse state due to global warming, which would make several regions of the planet uninhabitable for humans, an worldwide study revealed on Tuesday.

He said that the current global temperatures were just over 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels and rising by 0.17 degree Celsius every decade.

If polar ice continues to melt, forests are slashed and greenhouse gases rise to new highs - as they now do each year - the Earth will pass a tipping point.

"What we do not know yet is whether the climate system can be safely "parked" near 2°C above preindustrial levels, as the Paris Agreement envisages", Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, said.

Rivers would flood, storms would wreak havoc on coastal communities, and coral reefs would be eliminated - all by century's end or even earlier.

A group of scientists from the Stockholm Resilience Centre, the University of Copenhagen, the Australian National University and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research said that there were certain "tipping points" that could lead to abrupt changes one after the other.

Scientists warn that the new conclusions show that the planet is at risk to enter "Hothouse Earth" conditions, where the global average temperature in the long-term will stabilize at 4-to-5 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial temperatures with sea levels 10-to-60 meters higher than they now are.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp still expects players to leave
Paul Merson believes Liverpool FC need to sign another centre-half to finally win their first Premier League title. And while Klopp would like that fortune to change he knows there are other factors which are more important.

Researchers suggest the tipping point could come once the Earth warms to 3.6 Fahrenheit over pre-industrial times.

"That raised alarm bells because all of our assumptions regarding the Paris Agreement and controlling climate change are based on the idea that if we "just" stop emitting Carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, the processes causing climate change will stop and the climate will remain stable", study co-author Katharine Richardson of the University of Copenhagen told Gizmodo.

People must immediately change their lifestyle to be better stewards of the Earth, the researchers said. They said it required improvements in soil management in agriculture and forestry, improved biodiversity conservation and more emphasis on types of technology that remove carbon dioxide from the air and store it underground.

They also include Amazon rainforest dieback, boreal forest dieback, reduction of northern hemisphere snow cover, loss of Arctic summer sea ice, and reduction of Antarctic sea ice and polar ice sheets.

Steffen said that if the temperatures increased two degrees due to human activities, a process known as feedback would be activated in the Earth's system, which could aggravate global warming even if greenhouse gases are no longer emitted.

Commenting on the research, some experts said uncontrolled warming is still uncertain but not implausible.

"We are the ones in control right now, but once we go past 2 degrees, we see that the Earth system tips over from being a friend to a foe".
