WhatsApp forwards limited to just 5: Here is how it works

Whatsapp

That followed the killings of more than 20 people by crazed mobs, after they were accused of child kidnapping and other crimes in viral messages circulated wildly on WhatsApp.

Nearly one million people are "testing" WhatsApp's payments service in India, which is the largest base for the Facebook-owned company that has over 1.5 billion users globally. "This week, WhatsApp is publishing a new video that explains the importance of the "forward" label and calls users to 'double check the facts when you're not sure who created the original message, '" said the company.

WhatsApp had announced in January it would start allowing small business accounts to communicate through the WhatsApp Business application, which has over three million active users. On 3 July, the IT ministry directed WhatsApp to take appropriate measures to curtail the spread of fake and provocative messages through its platform.

A US-based cybersecurity company claims it has found a flaw in WhatsApp that allows scammers to change the content or identity of the sender of a previously delivered message, according to the New York Times.

Ever since the problem of fake news, and hatred messages came up, Whatsapp has been under vast Govt. pressure to take some concrete action. "That the above step puts Indians at an unequal level from rest of the world as rest of the users worldwide can forward a message to twenty people at a time".

Separately, India's federal police have begun probing Cambridge Analytica's misuse of Facebook user data, which New Delhi suspects included information on Indian users. Whatsapp will basically check whether a URL shared by users belongs to a reputed neighborhood or not. The app has also restricted the number of chats a message can be forwarded to, to five.

In its earlier blogpost regarding this new feature on Forwarding message, WhatsApp had written, "Today, we're launching a test to limit forwarding that will apply to everyone using WhatsApp".

As per a source of India's telecommunications department, the letter was targeted at exploring ways to block the apps during the situations of emergency.
