‘Stateless’ Thai cave boys and coach granted citizenship

Members of Wild Boars football team pray during a ceremony marking the completion of their serving as novice Buddhist monks

Heart-warming pictures showed the boys beaming with delight at yesterday's ceremony where they were handed ID cards. The births of Adul, Mongkon and Pornchai were registered at Mae Sai and Wiengpankham municipalities and they were granted Thai citizenship after they presented their birth certificate to the district chief. The area is home to ethnic minorities with roots in neighbouring Myanmar.

The story of the "Wild Boars" club has dominated headlines since the 12 boys and their 25-year-old coach went exploring in Tham Luang cave on June 23 and were trapped deep inside by rising floodwaters, setting off an worldwide search dubbed "Mission Impossible".

Coach Ekapol Chantawong, who was widely praised for keeping the boys safe after rain flooded the cave system, was rescued on the 18th day, along with the final three boys.

He said, "I am happy".

Regarding the approval for Adul Samon, 14, Venus pointed to the Cabinet's December 7, 2016 resolution, which declared that stateless children were eligible for citizenship if they were abandoned by parents and had remained and studied in Thailand for not less than 10 years. 'I want to say that football can elevate the lives of kids whose families may not be in the best position'. "If they have Thai citizenship, in the future, if they don't want to play football they can take exams to become public officials or find good work that is related to their field of studies", he said. The government also approved citizenship requests of around 20 other people, he said.

The rescue highlighted the plight of Thailand's "stateless" people, who are often denied rights and opportunities because they are not citizens.

The Observatory said stateless people in Thailand are unable to vote, buy land, seek legal employment, work in certain occupations or travel freely.
