Saudi Airlines suspends Canadian operations starting Aug. 13

Saudi Arabia Went Nuts And Just Had To Delete This 9/11-Esque Tweet

Saudi Arabia, enraged by what it said was meddling in its internal affairs, asked the Canadian ambassador to Riyadh to leave the country within 24 hours and recalled its envoy to Ottawa.

The sell-off began on Tuesday and underlines how the Saudi government is flexing its financial and political muscle to warn foreign powers against what it regards as interference in its sovereign affairs, the FT said.

The central bank did not immediately respond to a Reuters query for comment. "And Saudi Arabia is taking aim at Canada over Trudeau's refusal to endorse sanctions on rival Iran".

Amnesty International noted Ms Badawi has been repeatedly targeted and interrogated by Saudi security forces for her human rights activist.

Ms Badawi's brother was arrested in 2012 for criticism of the regime, and was subjected to 50 lashings in 2015.

Saudi Arabia would also "put on hold all new business and investment transactions with Canada while retaining its right to take further action", it said.

"So neither Saudi nor Canada are going to be affected much by stopping the wheat and barley trade".

While department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said USA officials have raised human rights concerns with the Saudis in the past, she stressed that Riyadh and Ottawa "need to diplomatically resolve this together". "We will be reaching out to them to try to support them as best we can", said Darling.

The 14-year arms deal, which directly employs 2,000 people, was described at the time by the previous federal Conservative government as the largest advanced manufacturing export contract in Canadian history.

All Saudi Arabian students now studying in Canada will be transferred to other countries.

West Virginia will try mobile voting for troops serving overseas
In a report dated August 6th, CNN stated that the app has been developed by a Boston-based company, Voatz. And the troops involved in it will continue to have the option of voting old-school with paper ballots .

The decision came after Canada demanded the immediate release of human rights activists detained in a new crackdown, including the sister of jailed blogger Raif Badawi. Later on Monday, the Saudi state airline, Saudia, suspended flights to and from Toronto by August 13.

"This particular case regarding Canada - we have raised that with the government of Saudi Arabia".

McTeague said the risk of Saudi Arabia causing gas prices to rise is minimal - even locally in New Brunswick - given the "very robust market" globally for crude and Irving Oil's allocation to the US northeast.

Tanks, armored vehicles and parts and motor vehicles accounted for about 45% of Canada's 2016 exports to the kingdom, while crude oil and copper ores comprised about 98% of imports, according to a government report.

Neighbors and allies Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates said they stood with Riyadh, although they did not announce similar measures.

Another source said Canada will be turning to its old ally the United Kingdom for help, which has appealed for calm.

A number of countries in the region have defended Saudi Arabia.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland issued a statement later in the day refusing to walk back Canada's stance. "The first Canadian source said Ottawa had no regrets about speaking out on human rights in Saudi Arabia". Her former husband, Waleed Abu al-Khair, is now serving a 15-year prison sentence for his human rights work and her brother, the famed activist and blogger - Raif Badawi - has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for setting a website for public discourse.

"This has nothing to do with human rights".

Canada's determination to place human rights at the heart of its foreign policy could cost it billions in trade with an incensed Saudi Arabia - the price of a diplomatic initiative that some observers say could pay off in the long run.

Germany recently also learned of Saudi Arabia's displeasure of foreign criticism when its diplomats criticized the war in Yemen. In 2015, Riyadh recalled its ambassador to Sweden and stopped issuing work visas for Swedes after the European Union member country's foreign minister described the Badawi court decision as "medieval" and the kingdom's ruling Saud family as presiding over a "dictatorship". The General Secretariats of both the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council have also adopted similar statements.
