Hurricane Hector threatens Hawaii, John targets Mexico

Hurricane Hector has maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (215 kph) with stronger gusts possible.

Swells kicked up by Hector are expected to reach shores of the Big Island and Maui late Tuesday, "likely becoming large and unsafe starting early Wednesday morning, and continuing through Wednesday afternoon", the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu said.

Hawaii County officials are urging residents to secure loose items and be prepared for changing conditions and a tropical storm warning has been issued by the state.

The forecast projects the center of the storm to move on a slightly more southerly course than previous tracks as it gradually weakens.

A high surf advisory has also been issued for east shores of Maui. Higher than usual tides will combine with the large surf to increase the threat of coastal inundation.
