Ben Stokes trial: Cricketer threw 'several punches'

India vs England,Clive Lloyd,Ben Stokes

"As I said, I can't recollect anything specific but I'm very clear that the words being used were of a homophobic nature", Stokes told jurors.

His defence has been built around an assertion that he wanted to defend a gay couple who were receiving "homophobic abuse" from Ryan Hale and Ryan Ali - who Stokes allegedly knocked unconscious.

Mr Ali has also denied a charge of affray while Ryan Hale, 27, was acquitted of the same charge on Thursday.

The cricketer said he consumed about three or four pints of lager and five or six vodka and lemonades on the evening.

The all-rounder is being cross-examined by prosecutors at Bristol Crown Court on the fifth day of his trial over affray allegations, which he denies.

Mr Corsellis asked: "Mr Stokes, you are just in front of the jury, trying to cover up your actions".

Under cross-examination from Nicholas Corsellis QC, acting for the prosecution, it was put to Stokes that he had "really significant memory blackout" from the night because he was "really very drunk". You are lying to the jury about the cigarette.

"I don't remember every little detail".

Earlier, Mr Stokes admitted throwing several punches at a man outside the club.

The cricketer told the court he had not mocked or been homophobic towards Barry and O'Connor when talking with them outside Mbargo, where he and fellow cricketer Hales had been refused re-entry.

Stokes was asked about what Ali was doing in the moments before he knocked him out and he said he could not remember.

When asked if he had become "enraged" at any point, Stokes replied it was a "difficult question".

Mr Stokes replied: "No, all my actions were in self-defence and fearing for my safety". Midgley asked. "You've misrepresented what happened, haven't you?" Corsellis went to the extent of saying Stokes was "hiding behind" his memory loss.

Stokes replied: "You could say that, yes".

"You know you were angry and this CCTV was you looking angry, isn't it?" However this incident started, when you saw Mr Ali had a bottle and that he was threatening to Alex Hales and hit Kai Barry on the shoulder, you made a decision to get involved and after you had been on the ground and he (Mr Ali) disarmed you thought, "I am going to show you what violence is" and you thought, "I am going to retaliate and I am going to punish you and hit you out of revenge".

Mr Corsellis told the court Mr Stokes appeared to be angry in the video, suggesting he was shouting and pointing at nightclub bouncer Andrew Cunningham.

In a written statement, his teammate Jake Ball backed Stokes memory of his demeanour on the night, insisting that he was in "good spirits", "chilled out", and "certainly not looking for trouble".

"He then turns his attention away from me and starts charging towards my friend, Ryan Hale, who is still unconscious in the road", he said.

Asked whether he was "looking down your nose" at Mr Cunningham, Stokes replied he "might just be looking at the night sky".
