Third strong earthquake shakes Indonesia as death toll tops 300

A Facebook algorithm reportedly misinterpreted the Indonesian word “selamat,” triggering inappropriate animations

A magnitude 6.2 quake rocked Indonesia's Lombok on Thursday, with witnesses reporting collapsed buildings, the latest in a series of tremors on the tropical tourist island that have killed more than 150 people in the past two weeks.

Today's natural disaster was the third big trmor to hit Lombok in little more than a week but there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

It comes just four days after a massive 6.9 magnitude quake shook the region on Sunday, killing 350 people.

About three-quarters of the island's rural north have been without electricity.

But disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Wednesday the information from those sources was incomplete and had not been cross-checked for duplication.

This most recent aftershock happened on Thursday and had a magnitude of 5.9.

A humanitarian crisis looms in Lombok, which was rocked by another deadly quake last month that killed 17 people, with thousands of victims of Sunday's disaster in desperate need of clean water, food, medicine and shelter, aid agencies say.

Authorities made announcements over loudspeakers at evacuation sites after Thursday's quake, urging people to remain calm and stay inside tents or find open space if they were inside or near buildings.

Strong aftershock hits Indonesian island of Lombok where tens of thousands are homeless after powerful quake a week ago.

Displaced residents living in shelters rushed out of their temporary homes, fearing more destruction to structures already weakened from the previous two quakes.

Rescuers are finding some remote areas hard to reach because bridges and roads have been destroyed by the quake.

Rescuers have found three bodies and also managed to pull one man alive from the twisted wreckage of one mosque in Lading Lading village, while at least one body has been spotted under the rubble in Pemenang.

The death toll of Sunday's quake now stands at 319 but is likely to rise, according to Indonesia's chief security minister Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Wiranto said the government will develop a plan to rebuild communities on Lombok, which like its more famous neighbour Bali is a popular tourist destination with powder-white beaches, mountains and a lush interior.

But Mr Sutopo said some areas in the north had still not received any aid.

Kurniawan Eko Wibowo, a doctor at the field hospital, said most patients had broken bones and head injuries.
