Pursuit ends in hostage situation at LA grocery store

BREAKING, refresh for updates: Police have surrounded a Trader Joe's market in Silver Lake after a car-theft suspect crashed the vehicle after a pursuit and fled into the market. The chase ended when the suspect crashed the vehicle into a pole outside of the Trader Joe's police said.

Los Angeles Times reports that authorities arrived to the store at around 4 p.m.

A shooting and chase suspect is barricaded inside a Trader Joe's in Silver Lake, prompting a tactical alert and major law enforcement response on Saturday.

Twenty-two people are believed to be hiding in a closet and are now texting police.

Witnesses are telling local TV news reporters that multiple shots were fired and that people remain inside the building, but police have not confirmed that. CBS2 reports that the gunman may be holding as many as 20 people might in the store.

It is unknown if shots fired were from police or the suspect.
