Hungary's Orban in Israel pledges "zero tolerance" for anti-Semitism

EU Starts Legal Action Against Hungary for 'Stop Soros' Migrant Law

The protesters held signs reading "Never again" in Hungarian and Hebrew and shouted "Shame on you", The Times of Israel reported.

"[Prime Minister Orbán's] visit will promote the good bilateral relations as expressed, inter alia, by Hungary's support of Israel's position in European and global fora and by emphasizing the importance of the continued struggle against anti-Semitism", the ministry noted in an official statement.

The trip comes a day after reports in the Israeli media that, under Netanyahu's orders, Israel has lobbied the United States administration to "open doors" to Orban's government, which has traditionally been kept at arm's length due to its ultra-nationalist stances and the prime minister's embracing of what he has termed an "illiberal democracy".

Mr Orban, who described Mr Netanyahu and himself as "a Jewish patriot and a Hungarian patriot", lauded cooperation between the two nations. "It is deeply appreciated, and it is important".

"I know what you are doing against anti-Semitism". While western Europe has taken in millions of immigrants, a lot of them Muslims from the Middle East, Africa and Asia, Hungary and other eastern European countries have fastidiously guarded their borders and prevented immigrants from entering by building walls and instituting tough rules for absorption.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Orban he is "a true friend of Israel" and "have stood up for Israel time and time again in worldwide forums".

In an unusual move for an European Union leader, Orban will not travel to the Israeli-occupied West Bank and will not hold any talks with Palestinian leaders.

On Thursday, Orban will meet with Foreign Ministry Director General Yuval Rotem before beginning the official schedule of his trip, which will start with a meeting with Netanyahu at the Prime Minister's Office.

Netanyahu has extended his praise to all of the so-called Visegrad group, which includes Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and whose nationalist stances have been a thorn in Brussels' side.

He also met those countries' leaders in Budapest previous year.

The Hungarian legislation package, called "Stop Soros" in reference to the Jewish - Hungarian billionaire philanthropist George Soros, refers to an alleged plan for managing the migrant crisis which Hungary's government has repeatedly attributed to Soros.

Netanyahu criticized Soros as well for supporting human rights groups critical of the Israeli government. Last year, Orban's government released posters which, according to critics, used anti-Semitic stereotypes.

Orban and far-right activists have attacked Soros for well over a year, waging a campaign that has involved billboards and other advertisements.

Orban has often expressed admiration for the Hungary's wartime fascist leader, Miklos Horthy, who collaborated with Adolf Hitler during World War II and passed various anti-Semitic laws and policies against Hungarian Jews, over half a million of whom were eventually deported to Nazi death camps.
