Al Sharpton Says His Meeting With Michael Cohen Sends ‘Signal’ to Trump

Donald Trump Michael Cohen and Karen McDougal

Although Trump charged in his tweet that the Federal Bureau of Investigation broke into Cohen's office, the agency was executing court-approved warrants in conducting the searches.

Trump and Cohen discussed the possible payment after AMI, the parent company of the National Enquirer, bought the rights to McDougal's story for $150,000 in August 2016, then sat on it. He said Trump did not know he was being recorded and claimed that the president had done nothing wrong.

That payout seems to be a significant part of a federal investigation into Cohen that's been going on for months, as the hush money may be in violation of campaign finance laws.

Trump had initially said publicly that he believed his longtime fixer would remain loyal to him, but Cohen has increasingly suggested he's preparing to cooperate with the feds as he grows more and more isolated from his former boss. Giuliani says what's important is Trump said that if it were made it should be properly documented.

Sharpton told MSNBC's Ali Velshi that he has a longstanding relationship with Cohen dating back to Trump's time as a real estate mogul in NY, adding that Cohen used to "arrange" meetings between the two men to discuss their differences on social justice issues.

Sharpton told Velshi that Cohen's decision to sit down with the MSNBC host known for his work in the civil rights movement was a "signal" to Trump and Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's special counsel investigation that he was not in lock-step with his former boss. Federal prosecutors in NY are investigating Cohen for possible bank and tax fraud, and for possible campaign law violations linked to a $130,000 payment to Daniels and other matters related to Trump's campaign, a person familiar with the investigation has told Reuters.

The other woman, adult film actress Stormy Daniels, says Cohen paid her $130,000 in exchange for her silence about an affair she says she had with Trump in 2006.

"So not only is suggesting that Cohen committed a crime in recording him, but to accuse his former lawyer, who simply said may have the goods on him of committing the crime is a awful, bad idea", Specter continued.
