Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a reboot

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

20th Century Fox Television has announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a reboot that will be executive produced by Joss Whedon. The two worked together previously on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. A network has yet to be announced, but Whedon is now working with Monica Owusu-Breen to write the script. Joss Whedon's cult hit drama took his original idea, which was made into a fine 1992 movie but not what Whedon had envisioned, and became one of the best shows of its generation, spawning a die-hard fandom with its great characters, sharp writing, and powerful drama.

Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.

Deadline reports that a new version of the show (featuring yes, a black female lead), is in development at Fox 21 TV Studios. Gail Berman, Fran Kazui, Kaz Kazui, Joe Earley will also serve as executive producers on the TV series. It's unclear if Whedon will have any additional role on the new Buffy due to his other commitments.

"I've been WAITING and WAITING for this buffy reboot for the past GOD knows how many years and i FINALLY RECEIVE no one is raining on my parade! today is a good day!" wrote Twitter user @bargalaxies. Talks reportedly began in the fall of that year; THR notes that Breen's involvement pushed the project to the next stage.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series ran from 1997-2003 on The WB and UPN, serving as a linchpin of The WB's teen-focused lineup in the late '90s and early '00s. Sarah Michelle Gellar will not be back as the titular slayer - instead, the role will go to a black actress. In addition to Gellar, it starred Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Head, James Marsters, Emma Caulfield Ford, and David Boreanaz.
