After Helsinki, Senate GOP Quietly Takes Aim at Russian Federation

Senators Chris Coons, a Democrat, and Jeff Flake, a Republican have introduced a resolution that would support the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and beyond, agree with and support the United States intelligence community's assessment that Russia, with Vladimir Putin pulling the strings, hacked the election and "reaffirm" that Russia should be "held accountable".

Mr. Flake and Mr. Coons offered up the non-binding resolution after President Trump stood beside Russian President Vladimir earlier in the week and rejected the findings of USA intelligence regarding Moscow's election tampering.

The measure would be a resolution, not a bill, and would carry no legislative weight other than to act as an official Senate rebuke to the president for siding with Putin over his intelligence agencies.

"Nobody is saying or excusing Russia's meddling in our elections - absolutely, we should protect the integrity of our elections", Paul said.

The day before taking to the Senate floor to criticize Trump, Flake joined Democratic Delaware Sen.

Flake and Coons, both members of the Senate Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees, will speak on the Senate floor Thursday to request unanimous passage of the resolution.

Senate blocks Flake resolution seeking answers on Trump-Putin summit

"I think it's regrettable that this was objected to".

The resolution is the latest fallout from Monday's summit, where Trump downplayed the possibility that Russian Federation meddled in US elections, saying he believed Putin's "extremely strong and powerful denial" of his country's involvement. John McCain, R-Arizona, calling it "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory".

Although Trump seemingly reversed his stance on taking Putin's word over the U.S intelligence community earlier this week, the US President defiantly took to Twitter to slam his critics following the prepared remarks.

The Flake-Coons resolution was meant to show support for USA intelligence agencies, commending their work and the work of the Justice Department in the probe and agreeing with their finding that Russian Federation interfered in the election. The Resolution also calls for Congressional hearing on the Helsinki summit and demands the implementation of sanctions on Russian Federation.

After Cornyn said that more than a symbolic action was needed, an angry Flake said that "symbolism is important".
