Eat at least two hours before bedtime to lower risk of breast and prostate cancer, study suggests

Having supper before 9pm or two hours before bed slashes the risk by a fifth compared to those who ate late, researchers found.

Lead author Research Professor Manolis Kogevinas said: "Our study concludes that adherence to diurnal eating patterns is associated with a lower risk of cancer".

The study was the first to analyse the association between cancer risk and the timing of meals and sleep.

The results "highlight the importance of assessing circadian rhythms in studies on diet and cancer".

Researchers at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health compared over 1,800 people with prostate and breast cancer to over 2,100 people without cancer.

The participants, based in Spain, were interviewed about their meal timings, food and sleep habits and chronotype. "We - not only humans but all living organisms - have developed throughout time functioning differently in day and night".

"Understanding why African-American men are more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer than men of other racial and ethnic groups is a critical, unanswered question in cancer disparities research", said NCI Director Ned Sharpless, M.D. Over the past 20 years, studies investigating this disparity have been small in size and limited in scope.

RESPOND, a cooperative agreement, will be led by Christopher Haiman, Sc.D., of the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, in collaboration with John Carpten, Ph.D., Ann Hamilton, Ph.D., and David Conti, Ph.D., also of USC; Scarlett Gomez, Ph.D., of the University of California, San Francisco; Tamara Lotan, M.D., of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore; and Franklin Huang, M.D., Ph.D., of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

"African-American men have about a 15 percent chance of developing prostate cancer in their lifetimes, compared to about a 10 percent chance for white men, and African-American men are more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive disease", the NIH said in a statement. "This approval delivers on the potential for XTANDI to help men at an earlier stage of the disease, and we are continuing to evaluate the medicine in an extensive development program across additional prostate cancer populations".

Cancer is complex and diet certainly is not the only thing that affects cancer risk. "What comes up clearly from this study and what we know from biology, is that eating at the wrong time may have a long-term effect".

"You don't need research to tell you if you eat a lot or drink a lot and go straight to bed then you won't sleep well that night", Kogevinas explained.
