First Republican Supports Efforts to Restore Net Neutrality Rules

House Republican backs effort to restore net neutrality rules

Realtors® were vocal opponents of rules proposed by the FCC to create a two-tiered internet by allowing ISPs to charge companies a premium to boost website download speeds.

Rep. Coffman's bill comes in response to the Federal Communications Commission's 2017 decision to dismantle net neutrality regulations, with the legislation ensuring that Internet Service Providers, or ISPs, can not block or throttle online content or services.

The Federal Communications Commission repealed the open internet rules in December by a 3-2 vote, sparking a firestorm of criticism on social media websites, opposition from internet firms like Facebook Inc (FB.O) and Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), and protests among Democrats in the Republican-controlled Congress. And while the Senate voted 52 to 47 back in May to reverse the FCC's attack on net neutrality, companion efforts to set up a similar vote in the House have, as expected, had a hard time gaining traction thanks to ISP lobbying influence.

"By signing the CRA resolution discharge petition, Mr. Coffman acknowledges that most outside Washington simply want net neutrality protections in place now, and that Americans can not wait while unelected FCC Commissioners experiment with abandoning consumers when it comes to broadband - the essential network of the 21st century". The bill would ban internet service providers (ISPs) from blocking internet access, "throttling" internet access, and paid prioritization, among other things.

"It is really quite simple", Coffman said. But advocacy groups that support net neutrality praised Coffman for becoming the first House Republican to sign the petition.

Leo Varadakar says EU WON'T give ground in Brexit talks
While praising the PM's "courage and resilience", he said her Chequers plan would see the United Kingdom in "miserable limbo". Ms Swinson posted on Twitter: "This is calculated, deliberate breaking of trust by government whips to win at all costs".

The 2015 order subjected internet providers to strict regulations by the FCC, arguing consumers needed protection from internet provider practices, and left the door open to potential future rate regulation.

The National Association of Realtors® commends Rep. Mike Coffman for his introduction of the 21st Century Internet Act.

"Mr Coffman's own net neutrality bill is a welcomed step forward in the longer term discussion around net neutrality legislation".

Coffman says he sees repealing the rollback as a way to force Congress' hand on legislating net neutrality.

"I hope more Republicans will join this effort and stand on the side of American families who rely on and overwhelmingly support a free and open Internet", said Sen.
