Robert Mueller Indicts Russian Intel Officials for DNC Hack

Trump tags EU Russia & China as enemies tells May to sue European body

Twelve Russian intelligence officers have been indicted on charges they hacked into Democratic email accounts during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. And they said that the GRU reached out to "a person who was in regular contact with senior members of the presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump".

Asked if he considered Putin to be ruthless, Trump said: "I can't tell you that..."

"The indictment charges 12 Russian military officers by name with conspiring to interfere with the 2016 presidential election", Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told a news conference.

Critics said they were sceptical Trump would press the issue at all, despite the indictments. "There is no allegation that the conspiracy altered the vote count or changed any election result".

Trump has repeatedly referred to the investigation as a "witch hunt" and sought to again discredit the proven Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election in a Saturday morning tweet. The accused are said to have covertly monitored communications on the computers of dozens of Democratic officials and volunteers, implanting malware and other malicious computer code, and using "spearphishing" emails to gain control of certain accounts of those within the DNC and the Clinton campaign.

"Russia, if you're listening", Trump said, "I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing".

"One unit engaged by stealing information, a different unit by disseminating the information", Rosenstein said.

Top Democratic senators penned a letter to President Donald Trump Saturday urging him not to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin alone during their scheduled summit Monday.

The indictments are the most detailed allegations so far of how units of Russia's GRU tried to influence the 2016 election by stealing Democratic emails, then releasing them in ways meant to dominate news headlines as voters made up their minds. It had been sought by special counsel Robert Mueller.

What is less established is the extent to which the Russian government, not just Russian citizens with varying ties to Moscow, became involved in this effort.

Still, standing next to Vladimir Putin, Trump said that it was actually the Mueller investigation that was a "disaster for our country".

By June 2016, the defendants, relying on fictional personas like DCLeaks and Guccifer 2.0, began planning the release of tens of thousands of stolen emails, the indictment alleges. On Feb. 16, his prosecutors charged 13 Russians and three Russian entities they said were part of a broader effort to sow discord among USA voters through social media - which they used to impersonate Americans, coordinate with unwitting US activists and even plan rallies.

"But it makes it very hard to do something with Russian Federation".
