Florida teen with peanut allergy dies after eating Chips Ahoy cookie

Mom's heartbreaking warning after daughter with allergies dies from eating a cookie

"Our hearts are broken and we are still in shock".

A Florida teenager who had a peanut allergy died after unknowingly eating a cookie with peanut butter, and the teen's mom says Chips Ahoy's packaging is to blame. She saw the red packaging and thought she was munching a safe, Chewy Chips Ahoy! When the re-sealable opening is rolled back and stuck open, you can not see the label on top that indicates whether the cookies have peanuts.

Travers-Stafford said her daughter mistook the treats for Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies, which do not contain peanuts, due to the similar packaging. "Her condition rapidly deteriorated", Traver-Stafford wrote. The family administered two EpiPens, to no avail.

Traver-Stafford said her daughter died within an hour and a half of eating the cookie. She was laid to rest earlier this month. Her mother's Facebook post about the tragedy on July 12 has been shared over 70,000 times.

The company says it uses colors to distinguish chewy from chunky, and describes ingredients in prominent labels. "Especially children", she wrote.

"We take allergens very seriously".

The parents are calling for greater awareness about packaging labels which may not make it clear that the products inside are harmful to people with peanut allergies.

The company pointed out that the packaging for Chips Ahoy! made with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups "prominently indicates, on both the front and side panels, the presence of peanut butter cups through both words and visuals".

"Across our Chips Ahoy! product portfolio, packaging color is indicative of product texture (i.e., Chewy, Chunky, Original) and is not indicative of the presence of allergens".

Red packaging is used for all variants of chewy Chips Ahoy!

The girl's death "tragically" illustrates the fact that teens and young adults are at the greatest risk for severe allergic reactions, said Lisa Gable, CEO of Food Allergy Research & Education, a national advocacy nonprofit organization.

She added that 1 in 13 children in the United States have at least one food allergy, and 40 percent of those children have experienced a serious reaction.
