British PM facing potential pincer movement on Brexit

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves the BBC after appearing on the 'Andrew Marr Show', in central London Britain

On Sunday, Robert Courts, the MP who took over David Cameron's old constituency said he was resigning as a parliamentary private secretary to the Foreign Office so that he could vote against the government in the customs bill.

May is now facing a possible rebellion from Brexit supporters in her Conservative Party who want her to ditch her plan when lawmakers vote on amendments to legislation on the government's post-Brexit customs regime on Monday.

It twice survived by just three votes after a backlash from pro-EU Tories who accused Theresa May of "caving in" to the party's Eurosceptic MPs.

Defeat on the amendment could have triggered a full-scale leadership crisis for the prime minister.

"The PM has set out on a number of occasions our position in relation to the customs union, which is that we will be leaving the customs union and she believes that that's what the British people voted for and it is important that we are free to strike independent trade deals around the world".

Connor Campbell, financial analyst at SpreadEx, said: "On the one hand it is odd the pound is in a decent mood, given that the "soft" Brexit plan agreed at Chequers is arguably in doubt following Davis's disappearing act".

MPs will also go home as the new Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab travels to Brussels to meet European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier for the first time since taking the role from David Davis, who resigned last week.

She said that would remove Britain's ability to have an independent trade policy and her government "will never stand for that".

Noting the deep divisions in government and parliament on the way forward, Greening said voters must decide - becoming the most senior member of May's Conservative party to back the idea.

But even before the European Union has had time to assess her vision for Britain's future ties with the bloc, her plans have come under fire from both camps in the Conservative Party.

"The inevitable outcome of the parliamentary arithmetic is that she will need to change it to keep the party united", he told BBC television.

However, May's leadership is under pressure after the publication of her plan to negotiate close trade ties with the European Union ignited a rebellion on both the pro-EU and eurosceptic wings of her party.

And he said he was concerned the plan would become "even more compromised" in negotiations with the EU.

And he insisted: "I am simply asking the prime minister to hold to the pledges that she has made and to keep the government true to the commitments it has made". It could be debated by MPs when the bill returns from the Lords, they added.

Asked whether the Government meant to press ahead with a vote on bringing the recess date forward, Mrs May's official spokesman said: "The Government came forward with this proposal following discussions with other parties".
