US accuses North Korea of breaching UN sanctions…

NATO leaders urge continuation of 'decisive pressure' on North Korea

The U.S. has reportedly accused North Korea of breaching a United Nations sanctions cap on refined petroleum by making illicit transfers between ships at sea.

This is stated in the official document, which Washington presented to the members of the UN Security Council.

In December the 15-member Security Council capped refined petroleum product exports to North Korea at 500,000 barrels a year.

Only Russia and China have detailed genuine offers of about 14,000 tons of refined oil to North Korea in 2018, according to the website of Security Council North Korea sanctions committee.

Previously sanctioned ships have already been spotted by Western intelligence agencies flouting U.N. Security Council and us sanctions, efforts that were resisted in part by Beijing.

The committee was expected to take five days to consider the request, which China and Russian Federation are expected to block.

The U.S. intelligence briefing asserted that most of the illegal oil was imported with Chinese and Russian help in a deliberate effort to undermine global pressure against North Korea's push for nuclear missiles.

The United States has insisted that tough economic sanctions will remain in place until Pyongyang scraps its military programmes and that the dismantling is independently confirmed.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was in Brussels with Trump for the NATO summit, held more than eight hours of talks in North Korea last week aimed at devising a denuclearization road map.

One of the satellite photos, taken in April, shows the North Korea-flagged Wan Heng 11 anchored at Nampo port in the west of the country.

It remains to be seen how the latest U.S. claim about North Korea's actions will affect discussions on the implementation of the UN Security Council sanctions.

"These sales and any other transfer must immediately stop since the United States believes the DPRK has breached the UNSCR 2397 refined petroleum products quota for 2018".

The United States has released photographs of eight instances in which North Korean tankers were caught at sea receiving fuel cargo. If no objections are raised, the United States request will be approved.
