Protests in Chicago after police fatally shoot man

1 killed, 4 wounded Friday in city gun violence

The protest came amid long-simmering tensions over frequent instances of police shootings and brutality against African-American residents in both Chicago and across the country.

Footage from body cameras and other surveillance video appears to show that a black man who was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer was armed with a gun and grabbed for it as officers confronted him, authorities said Sunday. Witness Allen Davis said that police saw the man's holster and asked him for his concealed carry permit, but when he reached for it, police shot him. "After that, they approached the subject, who became combative and as he became combative, flailing away, he broke free from the officers and they thought he appeared to be reaching for a weapon - which he did have a weapon on him - and officers tragically shot this man". The man was fatally wounded.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the woman also was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Nearly immediately after the shooting, a crowd of onlookers and activists descended on the scene. At least 80 law enforcement officers responded to the protest, according to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Nader Issa.

Videos and photos posted on social media showed a heavy police presence in the area following the incident.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that the scene of the shooting has been cleared.

Chicago police patrol chief Fred Waller told a news conference that a crowd became combative after the shooting earlier Saturday, throwing bottles and jumping on top of a squad auto.

Augustus wasn't a documented gang member and had no recent arrest history, Guglielmi said. An officer returned fire, police said. Three years later, three officers were indicted on felony charges for allegedly conspiring to cover up the shooting. Hours after the shooting, dozens of people gathered to protest the man's death. The officer also threatened to arrest them for walking in the street.

Some people hurled words instead of objects at police. McDonald's death led to the ouster of the police chief and a series of reforms meant to prevent future police abuses and to hold officers accountable.

But the number of police killings, particularly those of unarmed African Americans, in recent years has amplified calls nationwide to end what activists and others call the institutionalised racism among U.S. police forces.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the video, according to Fox 32 Chicago.
