May demands rebels back her plan or risk 'no Brexit'

The European parliament shoots down Theresa May’s Brexit plan within minutes of its release

Mrs May finally revealed what Mr Trump had told her.

US President Donald Trump told Theresa May she should sue the European Union instead of negotiating a Brexit deal, the British prime minister said.

Justine Greening believes that the PM's plan is the "worst of both worlds" and will upset Brexiteers and Remainers leaving many wondering: 'What's the point?' "Actually, no, we're going into negotiations with them", she said. I am fed up with all the backroom deals.

The Wycombe MP revealed that DExEU, set up in the wake of the Leave vote in June 2016, had been working on a white paper entirely different to the one the Prime Minister had sprung on ministers at Chequers, and that Brexiteers appeared to have been victims of "a year's worth of cloak and dagger to land us into the Chequers position", with the Cabinet-level department having served as a kind of "Potemkin structure" to give the impression that the Prime Minister was working on a real Brexit, while her European Union unit at the Cabinet Office was undermining them behind the scenes.

Although the measures are unlikely to pass in the absence of Labour support, it could prove an opportunity for a show of strength by the rebels meant to pressurise her into retreat.

In an interview with The Sun newspaper on Thursday ahead of his talks with May, Mr Trump said he had told Mrs May how to deal with Brussels but she "didn't listen".

He went on to say Mr Johnson, who quit as foreign secretary over the Chequers' plan, was "a great representative for your country".

'Now, if they do whatever they do, they have to. I said, make sure that you have a carve out.

'You know, I've called it a carve out for this.

"We will do a trade deal with them and with others around the rest of the world", she added. "It is a complete plan with a set of outcomes that are non-negotiable".

May's Brexit blueprint calls for a new UK-EU "free trade area" with interlinked customs regimes, but critics argue that it would leave Britain signed up to rules on trade it would no longer have any ability to influence and prevent it from signing trade deals with non-EU countries. "I think he's got what it takes".

Defending his record in office he added "don't tell me that the United Kingdom is losing diplomatic influence" citing the worldwide response to the Novichok poisoning which saw 28 countries expel 153 "Russian spooks".

It was unclear whether they will actually press them to a vote after some pro-EU MPs backed Mrs May's Chequers plan and EU white paper.

Without the backing of her own ranks and with a working majority of just 13, the prime minister will need to rely on opposition parties, Politico reported.

Meanwhile Boris Johnson, in his first public intervention since his resignation last week, appealed for people to take a more positive view of Britain's prospects outside the EU.

Boris Johnson resigned as British foreign secretary over Brexit.

"It is time for all of us - at this critical moment in our constitutional development - to believe in ourselves, to believe in the British people and what they can do, and in our democracy", he wrote. It's time we shared their confidence'.

May will get a sense of where she stands on Monday when the Taxation (Cross-Border Trade) returns to the House of Commons. I had to think who I wanted to see in the mirror for the rest of my life.
