Chicago man ran away, reached to waist in officer involved shooting

Members of the Chicago police department scuffle with an angry crowd at the scene of a police involved shooting in Chicago on Saturday

The man police shot and killed in the United States over the weekend appeared to reach for a gun in his waistband in body camera footage released by authorities yesterday. "We're not trying to fluff anything", Johnson said Sunday.

Although it is likely that lawyers and prosecutors and police accountability boards will conclude police were justified in using deadly force, the video isn't likely to convince protesters.

Four people were arrested during the protests. Four protesters were arrested in clashes between residents and officers, some of whom suffered minor injuries from thrown rocks and bottles. Police said only one officer opened fire, striking the man.

After the shooting, crowds gathered near where the shooting occurred Saturday evening at 71st Street and Clyde Avenue.

In the video, officers tried to grab Augustus, who pushes the officers' arms away and flails his arms.

A viral Facebook video released Monday showed a Chicago police officer saying "I kill motherfuckers" to the group of black residents filming the video.

During the protest that followed the shooting, officers pulled people to the ground and struck them with batons. He would not name the officer who shot Augustus.

The decision to make video public less than 24 hours after the incident was a notable departure from police department policy of officer-involved shootings.

No officers were hurt, and a weapon was recovered at the scene along with several magazines of ammunition, according to the police. The man pushed the officers away and was shot when he appeared to reach for his weapon as he fled, Waller said.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson called the shooting a tragedy and said in a statement that it's a blessing Augustus didn't bring the girl with him Saturday, as he's known to do.

The Chicago Tribune, citing the city's medical examiner office, identified the man as 37-year-old Harith Augustus.

The protesters took to the streets on Sunday after a fatal police shooting.

The Chicago Police Department has scheduled a press conference with Supt.

Chicago has also spent about $709 million on settlements for police misconduct cases, according to a recent report from the Action Center on Race & the Economy. Nader Issa, a reporter at the Sun-Times, recorded videos showing people at the scene of the shooting hemmed in along a fence and shouting at police on the other side.

The officers had been surveilling the suspect, wanted in the murder of Sharath Koppu, a 25-year-old University of Missouri Kansas City student who was fatally shot during a robbery in the back of J's Fish and Chicken Market on July 6.
