Zimbabwe opposition marches on electoral agency to demand reforms

Zimbabwe's MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa has reportedly stated that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is brewing instability in the country by trying to manipulate the electoral process through the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

Confidence in the election has run so low that the opposition now encourages its supporters to carry their own pens into the voting booths because they don't trust the ones provided.

"We will not compromise on the issue of the ballot". "To us, this is an attempt to steal this election".

Zimbabwe holds crucial elections on 30 July 2018.

A new voters' roll has been compiled for the upcoming polls, but the MDC has alleged that the list is flawed. Political parties physically inspecting the ballot paper is unlawful, Chigumba, a former High Court judge, told reporters on Monday, calling the opposition demands "an abuse of the right to transparency".

Supporters flashed red cards - used by football referees to expel players from the field - and blew whistles as Chamisa handed a petition to electoral commission officials in downtown Harare.

"We will remain resolute on our positions on the demands".

Fiat factory workers protest and plaster anti Ronaldo posters
Both Fiat's Melfi plant and Juventus are part-owned by the wealthy Agnelli family and controlled through a holding company. That's money that could have been used for job-boosting investments like making better cars, the union said.

"This is a people's demonstration for a free and fair election".

Douglas Mwonzora, MDC Secretary General said the peaceful demonstration will go ahead as scheduled.

Outspoken cleric and political activist Evan Mawarire, who was arrested under Mugabe's rule, called on foreign observers to take note of the opposition's concerns, saying the turnout for the protest was a sign that "the election is not clean". "When we win the elections, we will re-introduce the Zimbabwean dollar that will be stronger that the U.S. dollar and the British pound as well as making sure that primary education will be free for all", he said.

"We want a proper voters roll, a free and fair election".

ZANU-PF this week allegedly sent personalized messages to some registered voters soliciting their votes. "People voting by postal ballot are not supposed to vote under supervision". Mugabe banned Western election observers but Mnangagwa has welcomed them for the first time in nearly two decades.

The electoral commission has refuted opposition allegations. "Now that he is not part of MDC Alliance, you should not vote for him", said Chamisa.
