Trumps calls the European Union a foe of the United States

Donald Trump on Air Force One during his UK visit

Alongside Russia and China, Trump mentioned the European Union, which includes several of the oldest, closest allies of the United States, when asked about the country's global foes.

Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, replied on Twitter using one of Trump's favorite stock phrases.

President Trump had told CBS News, "I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade".

"But, in a trade sense, they've really taken advantage of us and many of those countries are in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and they weren't paying their bills".

Despite his comments about the European Union - in which he also said that Russian Federation is a "foe in certain respects" and "China is a foe economically" - Trump signed a communique at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit that had been agreed to by their ambassadors last weekend, five days before the summit began. "China is a foe economically. but that doesn't mean they are bad".

Questioned repeatedly about Trump's unpredictable demands, Macron injected a note of gravity, underlining that NATO's work is important, that it involves the lives of men and women - U.S. Corporal Joseph Maciel from California was killed in an insider attack in southern Afghanistan last weekend - and must not be taken lightly. "They're competitors. They want to do well and we want to do well".

"Germany's like sitting back silent, collecting money and making a fortune with probably the greatest leader in the world today, Merkel", Trump said in a 2015 interview with United States news magazine Time.

Mike Matheny fired as St. Louis Cardinals manager
Within a couple hours of the loss, the Cardinals sent out a tweet announcing the firing of manager Mike Matheny. Previous reporting said that Matheny was barely on speaking terms with slumping outfielder Dexter Fowler .

Mr Trump said he would raise this issue with Mr Putin at the summit in the Finnish capital, Helsinki, and "maybe some good" would come of it.

"I respect the leaders of those countries", he said.

In fact, Trump's father was born in New York City.

In response to Trump's remarks, Tusk said the European Union and the USA are "best friends". "But, in a trade sense, they've really taken advantage of us and many of those countries are in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and they weren't paying their bills", he said. "I think it's ridiculous, so I let that be known also this time", Trump said. During his trip, Trump made several disparaging comments about North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies like Germany and the UK.

He also accused Germany of "waving a white flag". There's a lot of anger.

"I tell you what, there's a lot of anger at the fact that Germany is paying Russian Federation billions of dollars. Nevertheless, Germany owes vast sums of money to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany", Trump said in a two-tweet statement after meeting with Merkel for the first time in March 2017.
