Theresa May Says Trump Advised Her to Sue the EU

May's position was further undermined by Trump who said in an interview published in Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper on Friday that her proposals would probably kill off any chance of a post-Brexit trade deal with the world's biggest economy.

The prime minister was asked on the BBC's The Andrew Marr Show what was the "brutal" Brexit negotiating advice that Trump had talked about in their joint press conference outside the prime minister's Chequers country retreat.

May said: "He told me I should sue the EU. We're going into negotiations with them".

She added: "Let's just keep our eyes on the prize here".

May's revelations came after a damning critique of her exit plans by Trump.

"What Trump is saying [is] litigation is a weapon, it's a tool, it's when you go in hard, and I think what Donald Trump told her is that a deal like this has gotta be done hard, it's gotta be done fast, it's gotta be clean, and it can't take a long time", he explained.

The British prime minister made the revelation as she tries to unite her Conservative Party behind her blueprint for a United Kingdom withdrawal from the European Union, warning detractors that failing to "keep our eyes on the prize" could result in "no Brexit at all".

May did not provide details of what sort of legal case the USA president had in mind, and it was not immediately clear what practical effects such an intervention would have during tense negotiations over Brexit.

May also said that Trump advised her not to walk away from negotiations altogether, a piece of counsel she does agree with.

It is unclear how such a lawsuit would work for Britain, a member of the European Union, but Trump has often threatened lawsuits in dealmaking.

But Trump has made clear his animosity toward the EU, aggressively criticizing his European NATO allies for taking advantage of the USA on trade and defense spending.

The British government has also stepped up planning for a so called "no deal" Brexit that could spook financial markets and dislocate trade flows across Europe and beyond. That has infuriated fervent Brexit supporters, who see it as a bad deal. Along with Johnson, the man who had been leading the Brexit negotiations, David Davis, also quit in protest.

"I'm sure Theresa May doesn't want to split the Conservative Party and therefore she will find that the inevitable outcome of the parliamentary arithmetic is that she will need to change it to keep the party united".

Following on from her article in The Mail on Sunday this morning, May defended her Brexit blueprint on the BBC, and urged her critics to get behind it.

Britain and the European Union would maintain a "common rulebook" for goods to ensure smooth trade including in agricultural, food and fisheries products.
