In an interview in The Sun tabloid published Friday, Trump said May's plans to keep close economic ties with the European Union after Brexit would "kill" its hopes of a U.S. trade deal.
"I actually told Theresa May how to do [Brexit], but she didn't agree".
Mr Trump described The Sun interview as "generally fine" but denied criticising Mrs May and accused it of leaving out some of his "tremendous" praise for her. "I told her, 'I want to apologize, because I said such good things about you.' " Trump said May told him, "Don't worry, it's just the press".
Those demonstrating against Trump included women's rights campaigners, supporters of immigration and LGBT groups.
He also suggested Boris Johnson, who quit as foreign secretary this week in protest at May's Brexit proposal, would make a good prime minister. Massive protests are greeting President Trump during his two-day trip to Britain-including a 20-foot-long giant blimp depicting Trump as an angry orange baby wearing a diaper and clutching a cellphone, ready to tweet.
Sue Dockett, secretary of the Wisbech, March and District Trade Council, said: "This is part of a whole national demonstration today against Donald Trump's visit to Great Britain".

Croatia defender Domagoj Vida apologises for Ukraine comments
He told beIN Sport: "People said I had a hard season but I don't agree with that". "This is something we'll never forget". Croatia will take on France in Moscow this Sunday for World Cup glory.
Audio of Trump's comments was also carried on airwaves. "I have a lot of respect for the prime minister", Trump said, saying that the newspaper omitted his positive comments about May.
Trump conceded that the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels earlier this week at times got "testy" over his demands that European nations increase their spending on defense, but he said it ended with "more unity" and "more spirit" and that Putin would see those headlines, not ones that talked about the alliance's divisions.
DONALD Trump today heaped praise on Theresa May but urged her to make sure her Brexit deal lets Britain strike a trade agreement with the USA - saying, "That's all that matters".
"It's not for me to say what they should be doing in the United Kingdom", he said at a news conference at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Belgium. I think he's got what it takes, Trump told the Sun. After meeting with May, a scheduled joint news conference was to be dominated by the fallout from the interview before he visits Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle. His standing in Trump's orbit was damaged by the publication of a book about the Trump White House by the author Michael Wolff but he has since positioned himself again as a leading voice on the USA far right.
In response, Khan said it was "interesting" that Trump was "not criticising the mayors of other cities" which had also experienced terror attacks. "The Chequers agreement reached last week provides the platform for Donald and me to pursue an ambitious deal that works for both countries right across our economies".
"So if they go in a slightly different route - and I know they do want independence, it's going to be independence, it's just your definition - if they are going to go in a certain route I just said that I hope you are going to be able to trade with the United States".
