Ryanair's pilots union in Ireland says more industrial action possible

Ryanair cancelled flights pilot strike

Ryanair has confirmed it has had to cancel a number of flights from Ireland as a 24hour pilot strike gets underway.

30 out of 290 flights set to depart with the airline out of and into Ireland on Thursday were cancelled as a result.

"It is unacceptable that competitor airline pilots are actively organising strikes by Ryanair's pilots when these airlines will be the direct beneficiaries of any such disruption".

In the first day of industrial action since the airline agreed to recognise trade unions, 30 flights between the United Kingdom and Ireland have been cancelled.

Last week, pilots voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action (99%) following a dispute over management's approach to transferring pilots between its European and African bases.

Some one hundred directly employed Ryanair pilots based in Ireland launched a 24-hour strike on Thursday after the airline's management failed to meet their demands during Wednesday talks.

"All customers who are travelling on flights to/from Ireland on Thursday 12 July who have not received any email or text notifications of flight cancellations should travel to their departure airport as normal", Ryanair said in a statement.

Ryanair released a statement on Tuesday afternoon confirming this, adding that trade union FÓRSA had refused invitations to meet on several occasions to discuss industrial action. And IALPA has said it plans to notify Ryanair of additional walkouts "in due course".

At the end of the month flights are also expected to be canceled, as stewardess of the Ryanair will strike on July 25 and 26 in three countries - Portugal, Belgium and Spain.

The pilots' union Fórsa, of which the Irish Airline Pilots' Association (IALPA) is a branch, had earlier said it was not optimistic that a deal could be reached to avert the strike.
