Big things, small packages: Aston Martin reveals V8 Cygnet

The very unusual 430bhp Aston Martin Cygnet was built at the request of one of the company’s customers and its most outstanding feature is a 4.7-liter V-8 engine producing 430 bhp

Produced from 2011 to 2013, the Toyota iQ based city vehicle was used by Aston to comply with European Union fleet emissions regulations, and produced just 97bhp.

The upgrade to a 4.7-litre V8 from a Vantage S marks a quadrupling of the output, which the Cygnet just wasn't built to handle. The automaker had to fabricate a new firewall and transmission tunnel from scratch, and it adapted the subframes and suspension from the last-generation Vantage. A fearless pilot can expect to hit 170 miles per hour if they don't lift off the accelerator.

In what might be the most freakish example of a factory customer commission yet, Q by Aston Martin has revealed details of a weird and wonderful V8-powered Cygnet. At this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, the feisty hatchback unleashed all 430 horses (320 kW) on the annual hillclimb event - and it looked like so much fun.

That's right, for some odd reason the folks from Aston Martin have shoehorned a complete 4.7-liter V8 into the Cygnet's puny engine bay.

With 50/50 weight distribution and a 313 horsepower per tonne power-to-weight ratio, the V8 Cygnet tips the scales at just over 3,000 pounds wet and has a faster acceleration time than the V8 Vantage S from which it stole its engine. There are also new central twin exhaust pipes.

Aston Martin says the V8 Cygnet requires less than 4.5sec to reach 100kph from standstill before calling it the day at 274kph.

This Cygnet will be faster than the outgoing V8 Vantage as the little car is capable of a 170 mph top speed and boasts a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.2 seconds
Aston Martin V8 Cygnet REVEALED ahead of Goodwood debut - Tiny car has supercar power

Top speed is a scarcely believable 170mph.

"I am sure that it will amaze and thrill people when they see and hear it on the hill at the Festival of Speed".

The interior is race-ready, with a full roll cage and FIA compliant fire system.

The carbon composite flared wheel arches are anything but subtle, and are there to accommodate the significantly wider front and rear tracks, as well as the 19-inch forged five-spoke wheels shod with 275/35 Bridgestone tyres at the rear. Behind it sits a bespoke carbon dash with the familiar Vantage instrument cluster.

Aston Martin hasn't stripped all of modern features from inside though, as the V8 Cygnet still comes with air conditioning and two USB ports, as well as an alcantara-trimmed steering wheel and Recaro racing seats.
