Stormy Daniels strip club charges dropped, lawyer slams setup

Stormy Daniels arrested at strip club in Ohio

Avenatti posted on Twitter a statement by Daniels that said she apologised to her fans in Columbus, but she would not perform her previously scheduled Thursday night (Friday NZT) show.

Stormy's lawyer, Michael Avenatti, said the incident reeked of a sting operation.

By early afternoon, prosecutors said they were dropping the case because Ohio's law against physical contact between strippers and customers applies only to someone who "regularly" performs at a club.

Daniels was arrested at a club in Columbus, Ohio while performing an act she has done at almost 100 strip clubs across America, Michael Avenatti wrote on Twitter. He vowed to fight the "bogus charges", even suggesting there are "higher priorities" at stake for the police.

An Ohio law known as the Community Defense Act proscribes anyone touching a nude or semi-nude dancer, unless they are related.

Prosecutors say the "touching" statute only applies to strippers who "regularly appear" at the establishment.

Mr Avenatti wrote: "This was a setup & politically motivated".

"This is ridiculous that law enforcement resources were used to conduct this sting operation", he said.

A fourth officer then exited the club to request assistance to make an arrest.

A spokesperson for the Franklin County Sheriff's Department told CBS as of early Thursday morning, Daniels was not being held there.

"They placed undercover officers in the strip club where they hoped they would be able to arrest my client", Avenatti said in a phone call.

A Columbus police spokeswoman did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the arrest.

Daniels has said she had sex with President Donald Trump in 2006, when he was married, which Trump has denied. After Stormy's performance, she and the other 2 were arrested at the same time.

A defamation lawsuit was also filed in April, alleging the President tried to tarnish her reputation and credibility by dismissing her claim a man threatened her in 2011, when she was ready to go public about her alleged affair with Trump. In May, Trump said Daniels was paid to stop "false and extortionist accusations".
