Sexually Transmitted Infection MG Could Become The Next Antibiotic-Resistant Superbug

Rare STI could turn into superbug, doctors warn

Mycoplasma genitalium is a bacterium that can cause inflammation of the urethra in men, and inflammation of the reproductive organs (womb and fallopian tubes) in women.

Experts told CNN that MG is now starting to become more resistant to antibiotics and could become a superbug within five years, while preventing as many as 4,800 women to become pregnant each year.

"The greatest effect of this is for the women who present with pelvic inflammatory disease caused by MG, which would be very hard to treat, putting them at increased risk of infertility".

Treatment for MG involves a five-day course of antibiotics.

An antibiotic known as azithromycin is more effective, but the bacteria is becoming rapidly resistant to it. What are the symptoms of this STI and potential effects of untreated infection?

Doctors in the United Kingdom are warning that a sexually transmitted infection called Mycoplasma genitalium could become a "superbug" if it's not identified and treated properly in patients.

Dr Helen Fifer, consultant microbiologist at Public Health England, said: "The new BASHH guideline on MG is a positive step forward to improving testing and diagnosis". The study and other experts, however, suggest a few concerns that the infection is reportedly developing resistance to this.

Mycoplasma Genitalium (MG) can be easily missed by those who have it, therefore leading to infertility in women.

Its draft guidelines detail how best to spot and treat MG. The NHS states that tests for this condition have only recently been developed and are not available in all clinics yet.

Dr Paddy Horner, consultant senior lecturer in sexual health at Bristol University and one of the authors of the new guidelines, said: "This is not curing the infection and is causing antimicrobial resistance in MG patients". Even if you have a regular partner, it's best to get tested at least once a year. It is passed on by having unprotected sex with someone who has the infection, so wearing condoms will prevent you from getting the infection.

"I think clinics should test for MG as part of their sexual health screening process, as this would have been picked up at the start for me".

Almost half of 16 to 24-year-olds admit they have had sex with a new partner without using a condom, a Public Health England report said in December.

When questioning public health commissioners in England, BASHH found only one in 10 plan to provide the appropriate testing for MG in their local areas next year. "We call on the government urgently to this funding available and on sexual health experts to ensure they implement these new guidelines", she said, according to the Telegraph.
