Israel Set to Land Spacecraft on Moon in Historic First

It was expected to burn an emirate's reputation with other global high tech ambitions.Unmanned spacecraft, the size of the launch and the weight of 585 kg (1,300 lb) will land on the moon on February 13, 2019, if all go according to the plan, organizer SpaceiL told a news conference in Central Israeli Yehud. The ship will be launched by American entrepreneur Alan Musk's rocket from the SpaceX firm and its mission will involve research on the magnetic field of the Moon. However, its first task will be to place an Israeli flag on the moon, the organizers said. The project was launched as part of a $ 25 million ($ 25 million) initiative to encourage scientists and entrepreneurs in 2010 for a low-priced lunar module.

"This is a small and smart vehicle, said at a press conference, IDO, Antabi of SpaceIL".

In addition to taking photos on the surface of the moon, the spacecraft will measure its magnetic field at the landing site, using a magnetometer installed on it.

"This project will take the aerospace industry into deep space", said Kahn, SpaceIL's main donor and president.

The spacecraft's journey to the moon will last about two months.

Kahn said: "After eight challenging years, I am filled with pride that the first Israeli spacecraft, which is in its final construction and testing phases, will soon be making its way to the moon".

SpaceIL is backed by a number of donors, including US casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, the Schusterman Family Foundation and South African-born billionaire entrepreneur Morris Kahn.

The United States, Russia and China are the only nations to have landed on the moon.

The dimensions of the spacecraft are 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) high and 2 meters (6.5 feet) in diameter.

Young Israeli scientists Yarivi Bash, Kfir Damari and Yonatan Winetraub made a decision to join the fight. The rocket will deliver the apparatus to a height of 60 thousand km, and it will be released on elliptical path around the Earth.

The SpaceIL project started as part of the Lunar X Prize run by Google. "It is a national achievement that will put us on the Globe's space map". It will then ignite its engines and reduce its speed to allow the moon's gravity to pull it in, and will begin orbiting it. Over the years, additional partners from the private sector, government companies and academia have joined, including Weizmann Institute of Science; Israel Space Agency; the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space; Bezeq and others.
