Israel hits Hamas targets Gaza with largest daytime airstrikes since 2014 war

After midnight Friday-Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces hit an attack tunnel and Hamas training bases in Gaza in response to the moderate wounding of an IDF officer by a hand-grenade thrown during a border riot on Friday. It said 14 others were wounded in the more than 40 Israeli strikes throughout the day.

The air force also attacked a Palestinian terrorist cell launching mortar shells.

"Hamas is responsible for the events transpiring in Gaza and emanating from it and will bear the consequences for its actions", the IDF said.

The army earlier on Saturday said it targeted two Hamas attack tunnels as well as other military compounds in the Strip, including those involved in the spate of incendiary kite and balloon attacks.

Over 130, mostly unarmed, Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since protests began on March 30.

The IDF spokesman said the aim of the operation was to "restore a sense of security" and that the military would "respond as necessary" to a wide range of scenarios.

Israeli ministers were updated on the developments by phone overnight Friday-Saturday, as residents of Israeli communities near Gaza spent the night in bomb shelters.

The escalation came just hours after a 15-year-old Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli forces at protests in the Gaza Strip near the fence with Israel and scores were wounded.

More than two million Palestinians are packed into the Gaza Strip, a territory the size of the USA city of Detroit - about 360sq km - which has been described as "the world's largest open-air prison".

Netanyahu said that after consultations with Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and the IDF chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot it was chose to take "powerful action against Hamas terror". Most of the recent rockets from Gaza have been fired by smaller factions but Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said it was an "immediate response" that was meant to "deliver the message". The military said it identified about 60 launches of rockets and mortars from Gaza toward Israeli territory, of which about 10 were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defence system.

The Magen David Adom medical service says a rocket landed on a home in Sderot Saturday evening.

Israel said it was focused on hitting militant targets and was warning Gaza civilians to keep their distance from certain sites.

Israel in recent weeks has repeatedly warned Hamas that while it has no interest in engaging in the kind of conflict that led to the sides fighting three wars over the past decade, it would not tolerate its continued efforts to breach the border fence and its campaign to devastate Israeli border communities with incendiary attacks. One soldier was moderately wounded by a grenade, the army said in a statement.

The Israeli Supreme Court has temporarily suspended the demolition of the Bedouin village, home to at least 180 people, until July 16.

It accuses Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas of seeking to use the protests as cover for attacks against Israel.

"What is important to look from these Israeli air strikes is that all of the targets except perhaps from that house have been essentially open areas, or training areas used by Hamas or other armed groups", said Smith.
