Here Are the Best (and Worst) States to Retire

Bankrate has published its full list of the best and worst states for retirement.

Financial advisor Bankrate.com has named South Dakota the best state to retire in. It was also the top state for well-being, based on Gallup's 2017 data on the subject.

Satisfaction with overall living conditions was enough to outweigh South Dakota's less-than-ideal weather, which unsurprisingly ranked 38th, Bankrate.com analyst Taylor Tepper said in a statement.

More positively, the Garden State was fourth-lowest of all states for crime, No. 10 for quality health care and No. 11 for cultural vitality.

The number one state was South Dakota and the worst was NY.

South Dakota came out on top mostly because of how it ranked in well-being and tax friendliness.

While Utah, Idaho and New Hampshire took hits for their chilly weather, they fared well enough on other quality-of-life issues to keep them in the top five. The cost of living is among the most important factors due to the fact that a comfortable retirement is affordable, while health care quality also matters as you get up in age. It did pretty well in the crime and culture rankings, but cold winters and sky-high rents in places like New York City apparently make it an unappealing retirement spot. Arkansas was slightly worse than California.
