Wimbledon 2018: Kevin Anderson beats John Isner in record-breaking semi-final

Isner reaches Wimbledon semi-finals after victory over Raonic

The Wimbledon semifinal between Kevin Anderson and John Isner is going to a fifth set.

At 24-24 Anderson took a tumble but managed to get to his feet and hit a left-handed shot inside the baseline, taking the point for 0-30.

In a match full of booming serves and countless aces, the first three sets were all decided on tie-breaks.

Isner and Anderson needed some time to adapt their game for the challenges on the ATP Tour but they didn't need too much time to find their rhythm and crack the Top 100, continuing to move through the rankings and earning a chance to play for the Wimbledon final 11 years after their ultimate Collegiate battle. He would go on to break the big American and then served out the match. It was a drama filled set that went back-and-forth, similar to the third set.

Isner leads Kevin Anderson 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (9) in their semifinal on Centre Court.

The reason the match went on for so long comes down to one of Wimbledon's quirks - a five-set match can not end on a tiebreaker, a tradition shared at the French Open and the Australian Open.

Chelsea confirm Antonio Conte's sacking with terse statement
The Italian's main gripe for the past year was Chelsea's failure to land the signings he really wanted for its Premier League title defense.

With a spot in the Wimbledon final on the line, the two power players beat each other to a standstill in a match that stretched nearly seven hours.

As it became clear that Isner was due for another endless fifth set, tennis fans were far from delighted. Their rivalry is a unique one as it dates back to the college days.

Isner won the longest match at Wimbledon - or any other tournament - when he beat Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set after 11 hours, 5 minutes in 2010.

Anderson had beaten 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer to reach the semifinal against Isner.

Djokovic beat Nadal in the 2011 final, the last time the Spaniard made it that far in the event.
