Merkel ally SUPPORTS Trump's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation comments despite US President's criticism of Germany

Trump has repeatedly said the US was bearing an unfair burden because it spends many times more of its GDP on defence than other NATO countries

Sources close to the talks told DW's Teri Schultz that Trump demanded European NATO members meet the alliance target immediately, rather than increase spending gradually as agreed to at a previous NATO summit in 2014. Though NATO allies have squabbled in the past, Trump seemed to be leaving in his wake not just bruised feelings, but deeper concerns about the future of the Western alliance that has served as a bedrock of the worldwide order.

After a week in which he had insulted allies and questioned the value of NATO, Trump-flanked by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton-gave an impromptu news conference at NATO headquarters Thursday morning before leaving Brussels.

"For years presidents have been coming to these meetings and have talked about the tremendous expense to the USA, and tremendous progress has been made", Mr Trump said.

Reversing the harsh criticisms he has leveled at NATO, President Trump says the alliance is very strong - in part because of promises from America's allies to boost their military budgets to 2 percent of their gross domestic product. "It's very detailed", Macron said, according to France 24.

He insisted it had been a "very good" summit because of the frank and open discussion it had hosted.

Hutchison isn't the only Trump emissary whose mission is, at times, to "calm the waters" after he stirs them, said Francis, the Dallas businessman.

At the contentious two-day summit that wrapped up Thursday, Trump intensified accusations that other nations in the 29-member alliance were not paying their fair share on defense.

On Thursday, the American president was reported to have arrived late at a closed session Thursday morning, on the second day of the summit, and disrupted talks with the Presidents of Ukraine and Georgia regarding the accession of their nations to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, in order to slam allies on defense spending shortfalls.

"We had a very intense summit", Merkel told reporters after the session. 4 per cent is what people should be spending.

"We made a tremendous amount of progress today", he said. He then stunned allies by telling them to eventually double the figure to a punishing four per cent.

Trump had opened the first day of talks on 11 July with a public diatribe against Germany, the second biggest state in the Western defence alliance, criticising its reliance on Russian gas imports and failure to spend more on defence. Macron said France, which past year spent 1.8 percent on defence, would meet the target by the 2024 deadline.

Trump said he wanted "peace all over the world, that's my goal", and he wanted to achieve this by building up the military, with his dream to have the best military equipment in the world and never have to use it.

"The communique is clear: it reaffirms the commitment to two per cent (of GDP)", said Macron, who was photographed smiling and sharing a hug with Trump yesterday despite recent tensions between the two.
