May says USA trade deal back on track after Trump’s criticism

GETTYDonald Trump comes to Britain later today

In his interview with The Sun, Trump slammed May over her "soft" Brexit plan, which has put May's standing as the head of the Conservative Party in jeopardy.

Trump described Brexit as a "very tough situation... between the borders and the entries into the countries and all of the things", saying: "The only thing I ask is that she work it out so that we can have very even trade".

It comes just days after the president declined to say whether Mrs May should remain in post, said he had "always liked" Boris Johnson, who quit as foreign secretary over the Chequers agreement, and described the United Kingdom as being in "turmoil".

He told The Sun newspaper that May's plan would "probably kill the deal" as it would mean the U.S. "would be dealing with the European Union" instead of with the UK.

Trump, despite his interview with The Sun, said that he supported whatever decision May comes to regarding Brexit, Britain's departure from the European Union.

"She should negotiate the best way she knows how". More than 60,000 people have signed up to demonstrate in London on Friday when protesters intend to fly a large balloon over parliament portraying Trump as an orange, snarling baby.

The president started the day by reviewing a private military exercise alongside May at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

And to make matters worse, he poured praise on the very man who is the biggest thorn in the Prime Minister's side and who many expect eventually to challenge her for the job - former foreign secretary Boris Johnson.

During the press conference, Mr Trump - who regularly accuses the U.S. media of "fake news" over its coverage of him - also clashed with a reporter from the American NBC network, describing it as "possibly worse than CNN".

Trump also sought to ease tensions over his interview comments, saying he "didn't criticize the prime minister" and suggesting the article left out the "tremendous things" he said about May.

"The message we came here to give today is that Trump is not welcome in Britain", said shopkeeper Grish Gregoran, 58, who took the day off to attend. As he said in his interview with The Sun she "is a very good person" and he 'never said anything bad about her.'.

Prime Minister Theresa May said her plan to keep close economic ties with the European Union once Britain leaves the bloc next March was "principled and pragmatic".
