Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein to make ‘law enforcement announcement’

Rod Rosenstein

The officers worked for two units of Russian intelligence, one that engaged in active cyber operations by stealing information and another that disseminated the information, Rosenstein announced.

The US Justice Department on Friday filed criminal indictments that accused 12 Russian intelligence officers of carrying out the 2016 hacks on the Democratic National Committee and the campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Rosenstein said the announcement of the charges on Friday took place because that was when the special counsel's office had completed its work investigating them and had the ability to present the evidence to a grand jury.

A dozen Russians have been criminally charged with hacking and leaking the emails of senior Democrats during the 2016 presidential election campaign, it was announced on Friday. Trump said Thursday he would ask Putin about the Kremlin's interference in the 2016 USA election, but pointed out Putin will likely deny it.

The attacks were a signature feature of Russia's active measures against the United States; embarrassing emails were passed to Wikileaks, which released them publicly.

Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein has announced new indictments in the special counsel probe of Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation. They also hacked into the computer network of the Democratic National Committee. It claims that they created fictitious online personas, including "DCLeaks" and "Guccifer 2.0", and used them to release the documents starting un June 2016.

"It comes just hours after President Trump referred to the Mueller probe, again, as a witch hunt, and just a few days before his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin", Tapper said.

The charges come after Mueller's investigation has already led to the indictment of 13 Russian nationals earlier this year.

Mr Rosenstein said there were no allegations that USA citizens were involved in the alleged crimes.

Trump and several Republicans have criticized that decision, as well as Rosenstein's appointment of Mueller as special counsel after the president fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey less than halfway into his 10-year term.
