British man injured in Amesbury incident regains consciousness

Investigators look at a piece of evidence which looks like a satellite phone recovered from Dawn Sturgess' hostel in Salisbury

A British man who was poisoned with a nerve agent is no longer in critical condition, an official at the London hospital that is treating the victim said Wednesday.

She said: "I'm delighted to be able to tell you that Charlie Rowley has made further progress overnight".

"Our staff will continue to work hard to provide the care that Charlie needs. We will not be providing further commentary around our contact with Charlie".

Sturgess and Charlie Rowley reportedly fell ill after coming into contact with Novichok on June 30, and Sturgess died days later.

He said: "As I've said, the role of Counter Terrorism Policing is to now investigate these two incidents - the latest of which is being treated as murder and to try to identify and bring those responsible to justice".

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the country's most senior counter-terrorism police officer, said there would need to be a forensic link to definitively prove a connection.

Skripal, 67, and his 33-year-old daughter survived the attack in the English town of Salisbury, which the British government blames on Russian Federation.

Police are working to establish whether the Britons were exposed to the same poison used in the attack on the Skripals.

"This is particularly important as we approach school holidays and so I am asking that people are extra vigilant and we urge parents to talk with your children to be sure they understand".

It's not known how Sturgess and her partner contracted the nerve agent, but tests have confirmed they touched a contaminated item with their hands.

Police are continuing to hunt for a contaminated container which they believe was handled by the pair.

AC Basu also reiterated he could not guarantee that Wiltshire was 100% safe from novichok.

Public Health England have said the risk to the public following the incident is low.

Mr Basu also said that the "brutal reality" is that he can not say with certainty that there are no traces of nerve agent left anywhere in Wiltshire.

Amesbury lies approximately 10 km to the North of Salisbury, where four months ago as a Novice was poisoned Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia.

The nerve agent was produced in the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Tributes have been left at Rollestone Street in Salisbury, where Ms Sturgess lived.

He said scientific advice suggested that Novichok could remain active for 50 years if left undisturbed in a sealed container.
