Wimbledon 2018: Angelique Kerber beats Jelena Ostapenko to reach women's final

Serena Williams rallies to reach Wimbledon semifinals

Goerges, seeded 13th, faces seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams on Thursday for a place in Saturday's final.

The 36-year-old Williams was absent from the All England Club in 2017 due to her pregnancy, and played her first Grand Slam since giving birth at the French Open last month when she reached fourth round.

Still, Williams said she's not getting too excited as she's still adjusting to tennis after returning from maternity leave. "To be here. To be in the semifinals". I mean, I always say I plan on it, I would like to be there, have these goals.

Williams, asked whether she's felt any pressure during this tournament, said, "This is only my fourth tournament back. I'm enjoying every moment".

Referencing her dismal form a year ago, Kerber added: "2017 is over and I'm really happy about that".

She is aiming to win a 24th major title, which would move her level with record holder Margaret Court on the all-time list of women's singles champions.

But this is uncharted territory for Goerges, who was in her first Grand Slam semi-final after losing in the first round on her five previous visits to Wimbledon.

That is going to change now.

Next up for the 36-year-old American is a match against No. 13 seed Julia Goerges of Germany, a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victor against No. 20 Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands. In a tournament where the top 10 women's players have been eliminated, Giorgi hadn't faced a seeded player since her first-round win over No. 21 Anastasija Sevastova.

Williams never was anxious about losing. "I'm fighting to the end and it helps me, gives me more confidence", said the youngest player left in the draw.

Williams hit six of her seven aces in the final set, including one clocked at 122 miles per hour, and won 44 of the last 54 points she served.

Leading 5-4 and two points away from taking the first set at 0-30 on Hsieh's serve, Cibulkova struck a backhand onto the baseline that was called out. "I feel like I'm back, but I still have a long way to go to get to where I was".

"It is a great feeling to be in the final and playing on the Centre Court is always a great experience and I am really excited", she told the BBC.

Still, Kerber had some trouble closing things out. That was a critical stage of the contest, as the American broke her opponent to lead 3-1 and sped quickly to hold serve for 4 games to 1. She was in the last eight at Wimbledon for the first time.

On Tuesday, Williams was one step closer to winning her first major as a mother, as she came back from a set down to beat Giorgi (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) to advance to the Wimbledon semifinals.

This is unchartered territory for 29-year-old Goerges. "These are the matches I was working for since I was a kid".

Williams is looking for her eighth Wimbledon title and has established herself as the big favorite once again.
