Thai boys lost weight but generally well after cave ordeal

The father of Richard Harris, a key member of the team of worldwide experts involved in the dramatic rescue mission, died soon after all the boys were freed.

Dripping water, birthday snacks and meditation all helped keep the team alive until divers eventually reached them.

The first clips documenting the Thai soccer team's recovery in a hospital were broadcast Wednesday night in Thailand at a celebratory press conference. "We were extremely fortunate that the outcome was the way it was".

"The most important is the things we learnt that never happened before". Some of them, wearing surgical masks, lay on their beds. The youngest boy, 11, appeared to be asleep under a crisp white sheet.

Thai soldiers relay electric cable deep into the Tham Luang cave at the Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park in Chiang Rai on June 26, 2018 during a rescue operation for a missing children's football team and their coach.

"Everyone is strong in mind and heart", he said at a news conference of officials involved in the rescue.

A doctor at Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital, where the 12 boys and their coach are being treated said the physical abilities of the final four boys is, understandably, yet to catch up with their teammates who left the cave on Sunday and Monday nights.

Even so, all need to be monitored in the hospital for seven days and then rest at home for another 30 days, he said. Two of the first group had a lung infection as well.

The mission to rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from a Thai cave is to get the Hollywood treatment in a movie announced by faith-based production house Pure Flix.

Thailand celebrated the successful mission to free 12 boys and their soccer coach from a cave Wednesday.

"I haven't asked the coach yet why he chose that order", he said.

They were lost for nine days before British rescue divers discovered them on July 2, sitting on a ledge in a half-flooded chamber.

"We're here really looking at this as a movie that could inspire millions of people across the globe", Scott added.

A former member of Thailand's navy SEAL unit died during a mission in the cave on Friday.

The commander of the navy SEAL unit that oversaw the rescue, Rear Admiral Apakorn Yuukongkaew, praised the efforts of all rescuers, which included help from Britain, US, Japan, Myanmar, China, Australia, and several other countries.

"The situation went beyond just being a rescue mission and became a symbol of unity among mankind", he said. "Everyone worked together without discrimination of race or religion as the ultimate goal was to save the youth football team".

The boys in the team were aged between 11 and 16, while their coach was 25.

The method was extremely risky, but dwindling oxygen levels in the cave and fears of more monsoon rains to come made a decision urgent. But Thai officials, acutely aware the monsoon rains could trap the boys for months, seized a window of opportunity provided by relatively mild weather.
