Officer Who Appeared to Ignore Puerto Rican Flag Shirt Episode Resigns

Officer resigns after dispute over Puerto Rican shirt

A Chicago police officer reportedly quit on Wednesday after he was captured on video ignoring a woman's pleas as she is harassed over her "Puerto Rico" shirt. "You should not be wearing that in the United States of America". 62-year-old Timothy Trybus can be heard saying in the video, verbally berating Mia Irizarry at Caldwell Woods.

Ms Irizarry asks a park police officer who has arrived for help, saying: "I am renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt that I'm wearing".

Connor, the officer, took a passive approach despite the fact that Irizarry asked him politely, and several times, to try to defuse the situation.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle called Trybus' behavior "abusive and offensive" and said Connor should have intervened. While Trybus shouts at her, points at her face and follows her around part of the park, Connor can be seen standing about 20 feet away with his hands against his chest.

Hours before his resignation Wednesday evening, Tamara Cummings, the top lawyer for the union that represents forest preserve officers, said that Connor was eager to cooperate with the investigation and get the whole story out there.

Trybus is facing a misdemeanor assault charge. We are further addressing aspects of this incident and General Superintendent Arnold Randall will have more details at a media availability tomorrow morning.

Trybus was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct, according to the Forest Preserves. on.

Here's how many 2018 Emmy nods each show and platform received
Leading the nominations in totals by platform were Netflix (112), leapfrogging last year's leader HBO, which scored 108. Samira Wiley and Ryan Eggold will be front and centre Thursday, July 12 at 11:25 a.m.

During the clip, which went on to be viewed almost two million times, Trybus yells at Irizarry that she "should not be wearing that in the United States of America" in reference to her Puerto Rican flag shirt, as well as repeatedly asking if she is an American citizen. "The United States of America is a nation that was built and thrives on diversity".

"I do not feel comfortable with him here".

"As you can see the police are not even - he's not even grabbing him".

More police arrive and Irizarry says she still doesn't feel safe. Then you should not be wearing that. At one stage he made what appeared to be a garbled threat that "You know what, I got some really really really nieces and nephews that'll go down on you". She explains that Irizarry has a permit and she warns him that he could be arrested "for not being compliant". "People have just as much right to be here as you do, and when you're drunk you don't belong here".

Puerto Rico is a USA commonwealth with its own constitution, rather than a state.

Connor then writes down Irizarry's statement of the events.

She said the incident went on much longer than the video showed, even after Trybus was in custody and placed in a squad auto. She said the group politely complied but her Puerto Rico shirt appeared to act as a trigger to the man. Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in U.S. presidential primaries, but not in presidential elections.
