New Jersey man could lose limbs after contracting flesh-eating bacteria

Angel Perez 60 complained of symptoms after returning from crabbing on July 2

In a handful of cases of the strain Vibrio vulnificus, people can be so severely sick that intensive care or limb amputation is necessary.

Flesh-eating disease can be caused by a variety of bacteria, and it kills up 30% of those infected.

- A family in New Jersey is anxious about its father, who was hospitalized after going crabbing in Maurice River.

But a few hours after he got out of the water, Perez's leg started to blister, swell, and change to a "brown, blackish color", his daughter told the news station. A number of different bacteria can cause the infection, which causes soft tissue like skin, muscle, ligaments, blood vessels, and fat to die. Perez-Dilan said that doctors at the hospital are working to save her father's legs and arms - but that "the infection has spread to his blood".

The infection has spread to all four of Perez's limbs and, if he doesn't respond to the antibiotics he's receiving soon, doctors may be forced to amputate all of his limbs.

Perez, of Millville, contracted Vibrio necrotizing fasciitis, a rare bacterial infection, and is in critical condition at Cooper University Hospital, New Jersey Advance Media reported. He further explained that this is naturally occurring phenomena that take place under the right circumstances, but did not comment on any particular bacteria types. Open cuts and wounds are another way for the bacteria to enter the body.

"In the United States of America, most serious infections appear to occur with the ingestion of raw oysters along the Gulf Coast, as almost all oysters are reported to harbor V. vulnificus during the summer months and 95% of cases were related to raw oyster ingestion", according to a report published a year ago in the medical journal BMJ Case Reports, which chronicled the case of a man who died after swimming in the Gulf of Mexico with a freshly inked tattoo.

Vibrio is more commonly a risk for people wading through floodwaters. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that these bacteria cause about 205 infections per year nationwide.

Most of the 80,000 vibriosis infections that occur in the USA every year are less serious, according to the CDC.

Larry Hajna of the New Jersey EPA said the appearance of harmful bacteria in the water is not in and of itself an indication of poor water quality.

Flesh-eating disease is one of the most common signs of Vibrio vulnificus, according to one study. The bacteria is more unsafe to those with compromised immune systems, like Perez, who has Parkinson's disease. But the bacteria usually causes infection at the site of a cut or wound regardless.
