Multivitamins do not promote cardiovascular health

Stop Taking Multivitamins to Help Your Heart. Researchers Say They Don't Work.

Researchers noted that fruits and vegetables were a good source of many vitamins and associated with a lower risk of stroke and coronary heart disease, with a strong link between the amount consumed and the benefits.

Researchers say the best multivitamins and minerals come from the produce aisle.

The research team performed a meta-analysis, putting together the results from 18 individual published studies, including randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies. "We found no clinical benefit of multivitamin and mineral use to prevent heart attacks, strokes or cardiovascular death", said lead author Joonseok Kim, Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

"It has been exceptionally hard to convince people, including nutritional researchers, to acknowledge that multivitamin and mineral supplements don't prevent cardiovascular diseases", says Joonseok Kim, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and lead author on the study.

Findings from the new study are in line with guidelines from the American Heart Association, which doesn't recommend using multivitamins or mineral supplements as a way to stave off cardiovascular disease. Other research has found multivitamins have no influence on the risk of common cancers, cardiovascular disease or total mortality in postmenopausal women.

“People tend to prefer a quick and easy solution such as taking a pill [rather] than the more effortful method to prevent cardiovascular disease, ” he said.

And in the United Kingdom in 2013, the NHS said news of multivitamin pills providing no benefits for the human heart conditions was true, thanks to long term studies.

Still, multivitamins remain popular, with up to 30 percent of Americans using the products; and some people reportedly using them to prevent heart disease, the researchers said. They suggest that in the past when diets were limited there were many diseases with clear vitamin deficiency causes, but in 2018 modern diets are much more varied.

Joshi doesnt counsel his patients to stop taking multivitamins.

"Simply put, multivitamins and mineral supplements do not improve cardiovascular health outcomes, so [they] should not be taken for that objective", added Kim.
