With dozens reportedly still missing, the toll from the worst weather-related disaster in Japan in over three decades is expected to rise further. And casualties are higher than in 2014, when more than 70 people died in landslides caused by torrential rain in Hiroshima.

The monsoon rains of recent days have been described as "historic" in terms of their their weight and devastation.

The premier faced some criticism after a photograph made the rounds on Twitter showing him and the defence minister at a dinner with lawmakers last Thursday, just as the rain was worsening.

Many social media users have criticised their actions. "Is the word refrain in his dictionary?" "Senators, I thought you'd care more for your people", another added.
