Fine imposed on Facebook over user privacy - United Kingdom lawmaker

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks during the annual F8 summit at the San Jose Mc Enery Convention Center in San Jose California

In an accompanying report, Elizabeth Denham, the United Kingdom information commissioner, expressed unease with the "significant shortfall in transparency" from tech companies, political parties and others that harness sensitive bits of information online. A group of industry executives met with France's President Emmanuel Macron to discuss how to use technology to improve people's lives.

Fair Vote runs on public donations and its self-stated aim is to to tackle the issues of data misuse, voter manipulation and lack of transparency in elections.

The report sets out regulatory action taken against a number of the star players in this year's data scandal, including a criminal prosecution against Cambridge Analytica's parent biz SCL Elections Ltd - which has since folded, in name at least - for failing to properly deal with the ICO's enforcement notice.

It has also sent "warning letters" to 11 political parties in the UK. The commissioner's office identified one of the companies, Emma's Diary, as being used by the British Labour Party, BBC said.

The British fine comes as Facebook faces a potential hefty compensation bill in Australia, where litigation funder IMF Bentham said it had lodged a complaint with regulators over the Cambridge Analytica breech - thought to affect some €300,000 users in Australia.

"If other developers broke the law we have a right to know, and the users whose data may have been compromised in this way should be informed".

Just 53 Australians downloaded the "this is your digital life" Facebook quiz app responsible for the Cambridge Analytica data breach.

Bank of Canada raises overnight rate target to 1 ½ per cent
EDT, the Canadian dollar was trading 0.7 per cent lower at $1.3206 to the greenback, or 75.72 US cents. Canada's economy continues to operate close to its capacity and the composition of growth is shifting.

Erin Egan, chief privacy officer at Facebook, said: "As we have said before, we should have done more to investigate claims about Cambridge Analytica and take action in 2015".

The ICO launched an investigation in March into Cambridge Analytica, the UK-based political data analysis firm at the heart of a scandal that's stirred up two national governments and the world's largest social network.

US regulators are still investigating Facebook's handling of consumer data and how it has worked with third-parties like Cambridge Analytica.

It has also said that, while it pitched for work with campaign group Leave.EU before the Brexit referendum in Britain in 2016, it did not end up doing any work on the campaign.

"This can not by left to a secret internal investigation at Facebook".

"The ICO's intention to fine Facebook the absolute maximum amount possible confirms the seriousness of their failings", he said.

Damian Collins, the chairman of the UK Parliament's media committee, said Wednesday that the company "should now make the results of their internal investigations known to the ICO, our committee and other relevant investigatory authorities".
