Donald Trump: 'Nato is much stronger than it was two days ago'

He started off at a morning breakfast photo-op on Wednesday with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and members of their staffs. Trump proceeded to whine, complain and caterwaul once again about how the NATO countries aren't contributing enough money to what he still portrays as some common NATO piggy bank and implied that they owe the U.S. for overdue payments, which is simply daft.

He continued: "Nato is much stronger than it was two days ago".

Leaders will be keen to hear more about Trump's military approach to Afghanistan, which he revamped last August to include a surge in air strikes to force Taliban militants to the negotiating table. "That is, are we really committed to the same goals and to the future of the organization?" Trump tweeted on Thursday morning before the second day of talks.

Trump has berated members of the alliance for failing to spend enough of their money on defense, accusing Europe of freeloading off the USA and raising doubts about whether he would come to members' defense if they were attacked.

"And frankly maybe everyone is going to have a good relationship with Russian Federation".

Trump appeared to substantially overstate German reliance on Russian energy and to imply Berlin was funding a pipeline which German Chancellor Angela Merkel says is a commercial venture. But not before Merkel and other top officials in the German government had publicly fired back at Trump's breakfast diatribe.

The alliance, which sees an attack on one member as an attack on all, was set up at the height of the Cold War, as a counterbalance to the Warsaw Pact between the Soviets and their satellite states.

"Tremendous progress has been made, everyone's agreed to substantially up their commitment they're going to up it at levels they've never thought of before".

"We are having a great meeting, we are discussing military expenditure and we are talking about trade". Finally, he will head to Helsinki for a summit with Putin.

When asked about that, Trump said he believed he could do that without Congressional approval but it was "not necessary".

"What's more surprising, the fact that the President Trump is calling them out on that or that previous presidents haven't?" he asked. "There is a communique that was published yesterday". Trump said he had a "very, very good relationship" with Merkel, who described the two as "good partners". The current commitment is to reach two percent by 2024 but with get-out terms that would allow some to stretch it out to 2030.

U.S. President Donald Trump arrives for a dinner at the Parc du Cinquantenaire during the NATO Summit in Brussels, Belgium July 11, 2018. "The additional money they will be putting up has been really fantastic". "They've raised an additional $33 billion that's been put up by the various countries, not including the U.S. And the U.S. commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is very strong".

"Everyone in the room thanked me", he said.

"I think we will be able to", he said. "I'm very consistent", he replied. "I'm a very stable genius".

And while the president has said he ultimately wants to up commitments doubled to 4 percent, for now he said that countries have agreed to move at a "faster clip" to meet the 2 percent threshold.

Trump has spent weeks berating members of the alliance for failing to spend enough of their money on defence, accusing Europe of freeloading off the US and raising doubts about whether he would come to members' defence if they were ever attacked.

It's an uncomfortable environment for May, who is facing her own political unrest outside of Trump's visit.

Trump's trip to Britain will test the bonds of the U.S. and U.K.'s special relationship.
