China vows retaliation for latest $200bn United States tariff threat

Trump Announces New Taxes on TVs and Air Conditioners

President Trump escalated his trade war with China Tuesday, identifying an additional $200 billion in Chinese products that he intends to hit with import tariffs.

The Trump administration is preparing to impose tariffs on US$200-billion more in Chinese goods, a move that would intensify the bruising trade war between the world's two largest economies.

The tariffs will not be imposed until after a two-month period of public comment on the proposed list.

In announcing the proposed tariffs, USA trade representative Robert Lighthizer said, "For over a year, the Trump administration has patiently urged China to stop its unfair practices, open its market, and engage in true market competition".

China's commerce ministry said it was "shocked" and would complain to the World Trade Organisation, but did not immediately say how it would retaliate. The official added that China has warned the USA that future actions would be met with "economic attacks" on American markets.

"Although I have supported the administration's targeted efforts to combat China's technology transfer regime, tonight's announcement appears reckless and is not a targeted approach", said Sen.

England pledge to attack Croatia in World Cup semi-final
Now, this is a massive day for the English team, it's their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years. Indeed, this first World Cup meeting between the pair will have a historic outcome.

"Tariffs on $US200 billion in Chinese products amounts to another multibillion-dollar tax on American businesses and families", said Scott Lincicome, a trade lawyer and senior policy analyst for the group Republicans Fighting Tariffs.

The action was announced by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on behalf of President Trump.

The tariff list could be released as soon as Tuesday, and likely this week, the report said.

"The outburst of large-scale mutual levying of tariffs between China and the United States will inevitably destroy Sino-US trade", Li Chenggang, the assistant minister of commerce, said. China responded with levies of its own, targeting $34 billion in US products such as pork and whiskey.

The USTR, the federal agency that oversees worldwide trade policy and negotiations, said it was responding to Beijing's decision to retaliate instead of changing its policies.

Investors fear an escalating Sino-American trade war could hit global growth and damage sentiment.

Trump has been considering tariffs against China since his officials concluded in March that Beijing violates United States intellectual-property rights, such as by forcing American firms to hand over technology. Rogers says that, "Before January 2017 all the imports came from China, including Hong Kong".

The fight with China comes as Mr. Trump is also locked in a trade war with Canada, Mexico, the European Union and other US allies.
